What Garage Door Should I Buy?

Posted on March 6, 2017May 1, 2026 by Bullet Garage Doors

Is it time for you to update your garage door? Are you overwhelmed by the amount of choice out there and aren’t sure which is the best option for your property? No need to worry as bullet Garage Doors are on hand to help. Below, we have put together a comprehensive guide to the different kinds of garage doors available so that you can make an informed decision, whether you are based in Welwyn Garden City, Hemel Hempstead, Bedford, Luton, Watford, Dunstable, Harpenden, Milton Keynes, Leighton Buzzard, Aylesbury, Stevenage, Hatfield or St Albans.

Overhead Canopy

Overhead canopy doors are perhaps one of the most common types of garage door in the UK, frequently composed of wood or steel and coming in a broad selection of finishes and designs. These are manually operated doors that are straightforward to install and use, offering as much width as possible for your vehicle to enter the garage. A canopy garage door swings upward and outwards to end up resting parallel to the ceiling with the bottom part of the door protruding out of the garage, therefore, caution needs to be taken upon opening.

Retractable Doors

Retractable doors do exactly what they say on the tin – they retract into the garage, once again sitting parallel to the roof but fully within the structure with no protruding parts. This is achieved using runners which roll the garage door up and backwards and is normally a quiet and smooth operation. You can choose to have either manual or automated retractable doors in different finishes or colours as well as materials such as wood and steel. Be aware that, due to the runner system, this kind of garage door will use up more space in the ceiling of your garage than a canopy door.

Sectional Doors

Sectional doors are perhaps most easy to identify by their panel features, sections which pull apart slightly in order to allow the door to move up and horizontally into the ceiling. Once all sections are completely horizontal they once again form a solid, continuous garage door. Sectional doors can be manually and mechanically operated and look really contemporary on your garage. Note that, due to their unique design, they can be more time-consuming when it comes to the installation process.

Roller Doors

Roller doors are spring-assisted and utilise thin, horizontal slats which separate as the door moves upwards on rails and then wraps around a cylinder placed above the doorway, saving space inside the garage. Popular with commercial premises but now moving into residential homes, roller doors come as both single skin and insulated depending on your requirements. This type of garage door is very sturdy and takes up minimal room but does require a power outlet as it is motorised.

Side Hinging Doors

Side hinging doors operate the same way as a composite door in your home thanks to hinges located on the side of the panels. You can choose a garage door setup that suits your personal taste and preference, with doors that can be cut to the same size or cut to different sizes so that you have a smaller ‘entrance’ door next to the main one. Side hinging doors are made from wood or steel and also offer various finished and patterns – because they are manually operated and swing outwards, you will need to accommodate for this space outside your garage.
