The price is what stops most people. Plantation shutters cost more than blinds, more than curtains, usually by a significant margin. So before committing to them, it’s a fair question: what are you actually getting for the difference?

Quite a lot, as it turns out. But it’s worth understanding what before spending the money.

 

What They Are

A solid frame fitted directly into the window recess, with wide horizontal slats running across it. The slats tilt. The panels swing open if you want the window fully clear. Simple idea, well-executed.

The wide slats are the defining feature. Plantation shutters typically run between 63mm and 89mm louvre width. That’s wider than a traditional shutter, and the difference matters: more light gets through when they’re tilted open, and the look when closed is cleaner.

 

The Light Thing

People who already have plantation shutters will mention light control within the first minute of talking about them. It’s the feature that changes how a room feels on a daily basis.

Shutters give you a real in-between: tilt the louvres and the room has daylight without anyone on the street seeing you clearly. In a front-facing room or one that looks onto a neighbour’s window, this makes the room genuinely usable during the day in a way it wasn’t before. It sounds small. Privacy That Doesn’t Ruin the Room

A net curtain gives you privacy. It also makes a room feel smaller, older, slightly sad. Plantation shutters give you the same result without any of that.

The louvre angle controls visibility from outside without cutting light. And with the window open, air moves through while you stay private. Curtains can’t do that. Most blinds can’t either. For rooms with children or pets where you want windows open in summer without losing privacy, it’s a practical advantage that doesn’t get mentioned enough. Cleaning

Curtains come down, go in a wash, need rehinging. Venetian blinds are one of those things most people intend to clean properly and never quite do. Plantation shutters need a wipe. Damp cloth, done in a few minutes, looking the same as the day they went in.

For anyone with dust allergies or hay fever this matters. Fabric window coverings trap dust and pollen and release it back into the room. Shutters don’t hold anything. It’s a boring reason to buy something but it’s a real one.

 

They Don’t Date

Interior design moves fast. Most window treatments that look very current right now will look dated in ten years. Plantation shutters have been in homes for decades and they still look right. They work in period properties, new builds, rooms that are traditional and rooms that are minimal. On Property Value

This one gets overstated. Plantation shutters won’t add a specific number to your house price. What they do is make a property look considered when someone is viewing it. They’re noticed. They’re remembered. If you’re replacing tired curtains or cheap blinds before putting a house on the market, shutters are one of those decisions most people don’t end up regretting. Before You Order

Plantation shutters are made to measure, so if the sizing is off the frame won’t sit right and the panels won’t work properly. Getting someone to measure properly before anything goes on order matters more than with most other window treatments. Our free quote includes measuring up on site, so nothing gets ordered until everything is confirmed.

Material is a real decision. Hardwood looks best and lasts longest but costs more. It suits any room. MDF is a more affordable alternative that works well most places, though not in bathrooms or kitchens unless it has specific moisture-resistant treatment. For wet rooms, ABS or PVC shutters are the right answer. They’re fully waterproof and they’ve come a long way in recent years. A well-made PVC shutter no longer has the obviously plastic look it used to.

Full height covers the whole window. Clean, simple, works in almost any room. Most people go with this and don’t regret it.

Café style covers the bottom half only and leaves the top open. Sounds like a compromise but it works well in rooms at street level where the issue is people seeing in rather than light. You keep the daylight from the top of the window while the bottom stays private.

Tier on tier has separate panels at the top and bottom that work independently. Open the top, close the bottom, or any other combination. It’s the most flexible option and also the most involved visually. Whether that’s a good thing depends on the room.

None of these is the wrong answer universally. It comes down to the window, the room, and what’s actually bothering you about the current setup.

Louvre width is worth choosing deliberately rather than defaulting to standard. Wider louvres feel more contemporary and let more light through when tilted. Narrower ones suit older properties and more traditional rooms. It’s not a decision that needs to take long but it’s one worth making.
